Super Duper Exotic Engine

Post by MNspiderman »

Now that I got your attention. I was trying to show my son the most badass'd Rear engined ford engine ever. No not the 427 side oiler. But back from memory this formula type car had either a 289 or 302 heck maybe even a 260 but the kicker was that the heads were "reversed" meaning it had 4 side draft carburetors on the outsides of each side of the engine and this V8 engine and the exhaust tangled together in the area what would have been the intake and discharged out the rear like a pantera or mangusto. It was a rear mounted engine. Definitely not a street engine. Does anyone have any recollection of this wild set up? I swear it was a ford but could be wrong. I think i saw it in magazines back in the day when the internet was still a wet dream. I will search the internet more but i don't even know how to word this in Google. Thank you to who ever can figure this out for me. It had to be from the 60's to early 70's.

Hmmm. wondering if it was some badass'd engine that was put into a GT40 from the 60's.

I believe you may be referring to this one.

It's Italian, of course! The 1967 Ferrari 312 Formula 1 car, with the intake and exhaust reversed and the "spaghetti" headers, as they became known. I saw them race at the 1967 Canadian GP at Mosport - awesome.

It sounds like you're talking about the DOHC Ford Indy car engine. The intake, injectors, were in between the cams and the exhaust was on top of the engine. Because of the design it was called a bundle of snakes. Here's a link to a page.

I couldn't find any good pictures other than here but it give you a start. IIRC the engine was used in the early Ford GTs before the switch to 427s.
