I'm enjoying working on the FIAT but this little setback isn't so fun.
I replaced the timing belt and decided to replace the water pump.
After replacing the pump and torquing the bolt at the 2 o'clock location it sheared off.
The thing is I used liquid gasket to install the pump. It also provides some bonding.
I pulled all the bolts and the pump was still firmly attached from the liquid gasket.
The thing is the sheared bolt is located in a position that should see compression from the V-belt tension. I would be more concerned if the missing bolt was on the outside where it was always trying to be pried off from the belt tension.
What do you guys suggest regarding removing the sheared bolt and what do you think the chances are that the pump wouldn't leak for 30K miles if I didn't remove it now?
It sounds like I should also plan on replacing bolts when pulling parts. Maybe cres bolts with an aluminum coating.

Re: water pump bolt broke
Fix it now, later will be a bigger problem.
There are a few different tools for removing broken bolts. Did it shear at the face of the block or is there some of it still protruding from the block?
EZ outs can work, Sears sells a nice set of tools that are pretty good. They also sell a tool intended for removing studs if the bolt is still protruding from the block.
Sorry for your troubles.

Re: water pump bolt broke
I haven't seen how much is protruding but from the length of remaining bolt I think there's about .1" sticking out.
Now is probably the best time to remove it although I just want to get this car up and running before the sun disapears for several months.

Re: water pump bolt broke
Find a nut that almost fits and weld the nut to the protruding stud from inside of the nut. Then back it out with a wrench.
Unless you dont have a welder. Then follow Karls EZ-out

Re: water pump bolt broke
I got lucky. I had just a small bit of bolt sticking out. I used a vice grip and it backed right out.
thanks for recommending I go back and get it now.

If a small amount of bolt is sticking out, take a file and give the bolt two flat sides. I found the vice grips are happier grabbing onto that insted of all round. Fire helps as well,I use one of those meps gas things for a minute or so regardless of the heat sink on the other side.
