Wondering if the input bearing in the trans. can be replaced without tearing the thing apart?
I'm lucky to have a couple of spare transmisions and will likely put one in when I do the engine swap.
Any insight on this, not sure if I'm up to a transmision overhaul myself, never done one and there are alot of things in there turning around at the same time.
Thx.

What makes you think the bearing is bad. Did it disintergrate ?

Re: transmision bearing/s
I hav'nt checked the oil the past month, but when I changed the oil 3 months ago there was'nt any shrapnel in the oil but the trans. was making a noise. After changing the oil back to 80-90 the noise went down some but I can hear it again. After I had a friend come over and weld the stud that holds the lower " A " arm back on,we went to the pub for a slurp. He picked up on the sound right away as he has been invoved with cars most of his life. "bearing going in the trans"
Thought while the engine is out this fall I could look at the trans. as well as this one shifts great and has no issues other than that noise. Perhaps I'll take it to work next week(after fixing the door opening mech.) and have the fellow that helps me with the cylinder heads, take it for a burn,he's another gear/motor head that used to race just about everything he could sit on or in.Perhaps he can pick up on it. Otherwise I could turn up the cd and continue with the top down.
I could take a oil sample into the Kenworth dealer and have it tested for metal stuff as well.

Re: transmision bearing/s
you changed to oil from what to 80/90.
You had GL-1 in there, right?
You will find metal in the oil, brass from the syncros slowly wear. You can change the large front bearing and the smaller needle bearing by removing the bell housing.
The needle bearing fits inside the input shaft and connects with the main gear shaft.

Re: transmision bearing/s
I had 80-90 to start then gl-1 for a bit but I thought the trans was really noisy and the oil was thin compared to the 80-90, so I changed back to 80-90 a few months ago. I did not notice any brass filings in the oil. The trans shifts great and no popping out of any gear except reverse has done so twice the past year and a half.... no big deal in my opinion.
When I swap the engine out and the car is on the hoist, I'll remove the pan and have a closer look. Both spares seem to be ok,no metal in the oil when I removed the pan.
Good to know about the bearings though. There is a trans. specialist around the corner from me,perhaps I can swap some fire wood.

Re: transmision bearing/s
when does it make the noise exactly? You can pretty much figure out which bearing is bad by the circumstances; only in neutral, in a particular gear, etc

Re: transmision bearing/s
I'll be taking the car out this afternoon for likely one of the last runs of the year. Clear skies but cool. tomorow s... and rain.
I'll pay more attention and see if I can narrow the source. perhaps just a throwout bearing which will be replaced when I swap engines.

Re: transmision bearing/s
If you dont mind rebuilding your trans frequently, keep using the 80/90. It has extreme pressure additives that love to suck the brass out of the synchros.

Re: transmision bearing/s
I tried the red line gl1 but the stuff was like water. The transmission guy behind me recomended the "normal" stuff . Ital Motors in Edmonton use a Shell rotella gear oil in the trans. and rear ends.I will check on the oil type tomorow. I don't do too many miles every year on the car, perhaps 1500-2000 tops.

Re: transmision bearing/s
Chris, it doesnt matter how far your drive, the syncros are soaking in the oil. GL-1 is mineral oil. Redline MT90 is synthetic oil (GL-4), which is almost always thinner than the petroleum counterparts but says that it is also compatible with GL-1 ( ).
80/90 contains sulfur which pits and corrodes brass. NAPA and Autozone carry regular GL-1, so why not use it. I have heard some say that the use of synthetics in trans cases are too slippery.
The only Rotella gear oil that I know about is GL-5, same problem. Ok for the differential, not OK for the trans.
I would cross Ital Motors off my list.
