If it were me, I'd thoroughly check out the '84. It was a better car from all I've read. If the '84 required less work than my current project, I'd buy it, finish the bodywork and paint on the '79, sell it as is and focus on the better car.

Yes but the '79 is interiorless atm. Well everything that came with the car I still have but I threw away the old original carpet and ripped off the destroyed top. I've got new ones but that would just mean I'd have to order them again for the other one. Its an Idea though, I'll have to see how much better the other cars are first.

From 1983 until 1985-1/2 the Spiders were made by Pininfarina, and the changes were cosmetic (badging, different dash, and a storage deck replaced the rear seat). The only mechanical change was rack and pinion steering as Mark mentioned, but that was only on the last year's model.
