magnetic pickup

Post by macawlover70 »

Hi all. Still can't get my 81 to start. Here's my question. I have a spark but it seems weak. I checked the gap on my pickup and it seems to be around .025. That seems wrong from what I've seen. Is .5 or .6 right? That seems awfull big.

Sorry guys, I see that was in mm so my gap is correct. Should have looked more before I posted.

It's possible the wire is frayed or broken inside the insulation on your pickup. I found my problem while wiggling the wire back and forth.

Hows the cap and rotor look?. Are the wires are tired going into the pickup, that is brittle, some broken off? Is the plate the pickup sits on tipping forward and contacting the lobes on the shaft indicating a worn bushing? Look at the pickup,it should have a straight edge, it its got an angle to it,its likely hitting the lobes on the shaft.
Just a couple of issues I've had with mine.

The coil grounds to the body through the mounting studs. Make sure the metal to metal contact is clean and tight.
