Favorite driving road

Title says it all, describe your favorite driving road(s), and why it is such

I'm torn between two roads myself. One of which is called Tantalus. It's a 5-6 mile road that goes up and back down a mountain. Full of hairpins, switchbacks, and swooping curves that pass through a gorgeous rain forest type of setting. It's ideal for these cars. It's pitch black at night and keeps you on your toes constantly. Ton's of fun. And it's also riddled with scenic over looks that cast a view over the majority of downtown Honolulu and Waikiki.

My second choice would have to be what my friends and I call "the cliffs". It's also a scenic curvy, swoopy road but this time it's a 3-4 mile road perched on the edge of 50-80ft sea cliffs. The contours of the road as well as the banking make this road a blast to drive. You can fly through the straights and stay nimble through the corners and then power out of them for some tire squealing fun. All the while you can see miles of ocean and if the day is clear enough, you can make out the outline of moloka'i out on the horizon.

one of my favorite drives is right down the road from my new house, it's a 40 or so mile road that winds thru the redwoods, not the most challenging, but a nice Sunday drive. There is a good restaurant and the end, nice hiking and picnic spots and a good swimming hole. The cruise on mountain roads at the Mirafiori Oregon event held in July is also fun and the only time I get to drive with other FIATs. We have alot of windy roads here, you can't really go in any direction without going on one. My wife used to hate it and got car sick, but not in the Fiat!

There are so many roads, that I enjoy driving, but nothing beats having some of the country's best mountain back-top closed off to the public so that you can give it 100%.
This is one of my favourites - and we do it in both directions, turning around and heading back after stopping for lunch at the Savage River Hotel (No alcohol served).

There was this beautiful area of road here in washington that I drove on earlier the year that went up the coast line towards Forks Washington. It was absolutly amazing, it went past this lake called Cresent Lake and it was the clearest water I have ever seen and beautiful view everywhere you look, nice twisty roads along the lake and through some thick wooded areas with trees Sooooo tall it looks like giant walls of green on the sides of the road.. I plan on taking my Fiat back up that way when its fixed, I went on that drive in my Porsche 944 last summer/start of fall. I dont remember the roads but im sure I could find it again.

My commute to and from work is kinda nice. From the house 10 kms of orchards and vinyards, then as one goes through Penticton.. Tim Hortons of course and then 10 kms of hwy(no traffic) next to a lake,then more orchards and vinyards to the custom cut sawmill.

My favourite road – that I get to drive fairly often – is Ontario Hwy 511, from Lanark to Calabogie (where the track is). The north end is about 30 km of hilly, twisty blacktop, nominally an 80 km/h (50 mph) speed limit – which means you can drive at 97 with impunity. As you drive north to south, there are numerous tight curves with yellow speed warning signs at ever-decreasing recommended maximum speeds, from 70 to 60 to 50 to 40 km/h. In the Spider, I drive this road at a steady 90 km/h through all the twisties; in the Porsche I use 100. In the fall, it’s really scenic, with the leaves turning and numerous little lakes between the hills.

Other roads that I have driven, which left lasting impressions, are listed below. Some of you may know them.
1. The Route Du Pillon northeast of Montreux, Switzerland, past the village of Les Diablerets. 12,000 ft peaks overlooking the most picturesque village – stunning.
2. The A93, north from Perth, Scotland towards Dufftown, home of many great single malts. A narrow, twisty mountainous road through the highlands – around every curve another set of ooh’s and aah’s.
3. Hwy 73 east from Lake Placid, NY to Lake Champlain, stuck on the side of a mountain much of the way down.
4. Hwy 1 (the TransCanada) west from Calgary, between Lake Louise and Golden, BC, past Emerald Lake and through the Kicking Horse Pass.
5. Hwy 60 in Virginia, descending from the Blue Ridge Parkway to Amherst. I have never seen so many tight switchbacks and steep grades. Unfortunately, I was driving my truck and towing my trailer. For that matter, the Blue Ridge was no slouch either.
6. Any Autobahn.

I have the Blue Ridge Parkway in my back yard but the best roads are the ones running adjacent to the parkway that all the locals use. We will be taking a nice little ride during the FFO on the Tail of the Dragon that should prove interesting:

Im all for doin the Dragon this summer! Or gettin some tail... It will be the highlite of this years FFO for us! Locally, I have to drive about a couple of hours for some beautifull scenic and twisty roads. It will be a scheduled event this year for our local club. And who knows, maybe there will be a winery on the way home too!

The 'Tail' is very close to me,and I have run it 4 times in the Fiat.It is awesome,but because of its noteriety it has become very crowded.Also,the local police support their entire counties with revenue from tickets.There are photogs around every corner ,who will sell a pic of every car that passes their station.Nothing like it used to be.Really commercial.I love the Cherohala Skyway,which is in the same area.Ran it last fall and it is challenging and drop dead gorgeous.

My favorite Fiat drive, happens every day at 5pm. It starts near the beach and ends in the mountains. It's only 3 miles long, 11 stop lights, 4 turns, and the speed limit is 25mph the whole way. My beautiful wife and a cold beer are waiting for me at the end.

We have a very nice road right next to us here but I haven't driven with my spider yet. It is the old highway 30 between Mosier and The Dalles. There are lots of switchbacks, plenty of nice corners to feel the awesome cornering of the car, and some extreme views of the gorge.

Why'd you have to start this thread boogiedude? Now I want to go driving and my car is no where near completed .

It does kinda put a longing in your heart, doesn't it? I took Juan, my 71, out yesterday for a couple hours of errands. Even though it was too cold to have the top down, I enjoyed driving it all the same.
