GMC IRS
GMC IRS
A few times in the past year I was driving down the freeway here in the twin cities and noticed a few GMC full sized pickup trucks with the rear wheels pushed out a bit. Then I noticed that they had an Independent Rear Suspension. I'd say I seen at least 6 of these in the last year. Anyone have any insight on this? I googled GMC IRS and such but come up with nothing. It looks like a factory installed item too.

Not sure if they are true IRS or just the rear steer units they put on some trucks.

I remember them advertising those a couple of years ago. Was so pricey nobody bought them. I looked at the sticker on one truck and it was in the high 50's needless to say I did not hunt down a salesman to see "what he could do to put me in that truck today?"

So then to sum it up. Its a solid axle with spindles, thats why its wider? The tie rods are on the back of the axle = thats why it looks like independent suspension? Is this what your saying or does it also have independent suspension with coils? I didn't get that close of a look because I sit about 9' in the air in my work truck. Still digging for the truth here.

Alright i googled gmc 4 wheel steer.
its called Q-Steer. Its a leaf spring rear end. over 80" wide so requires side markers. its from 2002/3. it starts out at $54,999. higher for the gmc model. its electric and only works at slow speed for obvious reasons. can you imagine driving a forklift at 70mph and slightly hitting the steering wheel. Whewwwwww. I solved my own case, almost.
