How about my setup:

The flagpole base is steel, and is called a "tailgater". It has a flat base your tire rolls onto, welded to a vertical piece of pipe to hold the pole. The pole it'self is three collapsing sections of PVC, and it fits in the backseat of my Spider nicely.
PERFECT for car shows, when you want the populace to be able to find you on a crowded field.

Another idea.....I am in the pool business and you could use a telescoping pool vacuum pole. Any pool store sells them and get one that is 8' to 16' (the shortest they will sell). Cut it off so it is 4' to 8'. They are aluminum, telescope, rigid, and cheap.
