Can you recognize this driver?

Post by Gunsmith »

I was going through some old pictures of when I was a teenager with a really cool car called a Spider and I came across this one and thought it was kind of cool now. Do you recognize the guy in the racing suit? I think it was Sebring around 1987?

This might have been right around the time he started that company.

Hay, that's Cool Hand Luke! 8) And he's runnin again. But, it looks like the cops in the bushes behind him are about to put him back in the cooler. Just a failure to communicate

If we could get that old man out of the way, I could tell you whose car that is.

I have to watch my figure Denise. Or I might not fit into the spider. I try to avoid fast food.

I had a H prod Midget in that era,and ran at Moroso in the early 80's.Paul Newman was always there for the regional events, running a Nissan in GT1.Very friendly, everyday type of guy.I was out there one year and Michael Andretti and Danny Sullivan raced in Formula Ford! Damn....I'm old

Never met him, but he nearly ran my Dad over on the back side of the Easton reservoir with his Bug that had a Porsche engine in it.

I saw him once at Bob Sharp's Datsun dealership back in the 70's.

I never held that against him as there is always a bottle of his Italian dressing in my fridge...

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Newman at Road Atlanta a number of years ago. Like Craig said, a very friendly, nice guy. Interestingly, this was the same period of time that Tom Cruise was getting into racing (after filming Days of Thunder). They were both at Road Atlanta the same weekend. Cruise stayed in his trailer between races and avoided "the riff raff" while Mr. Newman was friendly and accessable. A glaring difference in character between one of the greatest actors EVER and a "movie star"? Or it may have been because Tom couldn't drive for sh-t - crashed twice if I remember correctly, while Newman could race with anyone :D
