airconditioning in a spider ?!?!?

Post by abcman3000 »

Was air conditioning (cooling) ever available for a Spider and if yes in what models-years ?
I saw a late CS1 with a compressor in the engine bay ...I was amazed

The 1981 Spider I'm looking at had AC originally but was pulled out a few years ago.

I'm not sure if it's standard or what.

I can't say with a 100% confidence but, I believe that the AC was an aftermarket thing. A few guys here in TX have them installed. The units fit under the dash on both sides. Seems like you would bang your legs on them . Here is a link with a lot of info on the subject. Happy reading!

are you looking at a CSO Spider ?
I've read somewhere that the 1000 CSO's LE (limited edition )produced in '81 to celebrate 50 years of Pininfarina had as standard equipment air conditioning. Don't know about the other models....maybe it was optional..maybe aftermarket

isn't it a bit strange to install AC in a convertible ?

I thought that at first, but the LE editions were champagne color from what I understood. The car I'm looking at was originally a dark blue color with beige interior.

Maybe it was though, and I'm about to hit the jackpot! :)

Don't know about any tags, but this car definitely has electrical windows! :) Might have been standard in the '81's though?

The champagne ones look great.

even if the windows were optional... I guess nobody would have remover the LE tags and repainted the car only to fool you :))

I make the brackets to install a modern compressor on the exhaust side of the engine. The rest of the components for A/C are fairly generic. It's a nice addition down here in Texas!

Check out my A/C article in 2006; Factory Air in Texas still makes the kit. A/C works well.

abc: my 80 spider has air condition in it (aftermarket) works great. I bought this car last year from a couple in AZ. My only problem is the idle (up) when the unit is engaged.

My first Spider (1980) had one under the glove box about the size and weight of a cinder block. I eventually took it out because I never used it and wanted the extra leg room for passenger.

My '84 has a fiat unit that is tango-uniform... I'm wondering if anyone has photos of the "Factory Air" unit, the website has a pdf link for the unit they makehttp://www.facair.com/search.cfm?drill= ... yearz=1984, but it does not work.
