No Spark! No Start.

Post by cbrewer13 »

Ok, I just installed my DFEV. I have a 73 with a 1592cc so fabricating the linkage was a snap. got everything blocked off that should be.
Carb seems to be at least basically functioning. Gas comes out, electric choke seems to operate, etc.
The problem is, I've now got no spark. The only thing electrical I futzed with was taking the 12v from the fast idle solenoid and connecting it to the choke.
Thus far, the had not yet been started this year.
I checked each ignition component and everything was dead until i got to the coil. The coil had 12v at the + with the ignition on, but the the ground appeared to be open (according to my VM). I fixed the ground wire, so that with the ignition on, and a VM on the + and - terminals, i got a 12v reading.
Still no spark.
I checked the points, nothing wrong there, and no spark when i touch the coil lead to the rotor head and manually open the points.
I put my timing light induction sensor on the coil lead... no light.
Now, the coil IS getting quite warm while it's got power. I seem to recall this happening once upon a time when i reversed the leads on a coil in a different car by accident, but i'm quite sure this is not the case here, since it worked last year.
Also, this is not the original coil, this is a generic-ish looking coil without a resistor.
I can buy a new coil easily enough, but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for further testing or about something I might be doing wrong.

the 12v at the - side of the coil should go to 0v when the points are closed

If the wire to the points from the coil is good, no rodent chewed thru and your points are set then chances are your coil is fubar.

FIXED!

turns out, the ground lead from the battery had wiggled loose. i can not even describe how much better the dfev is compared to the dhsa3. how starts with no surge, right to 850RPM and rock solid. i find the normal double throttle push to prime on a cold start should be only a single puch on the dfev, it seems pretty easy to accidentally flood it. probably because i've got a 1592 and not an 1800.
