What year was your car? have you taken the top off the distributor? The later electrical dist.have a pick-up screwed to a plate if this has loosened,it might have slid into the rotating lobes on the dist shaft. Time for a new pick-up then and reset the gap and screw down tight.. There could be another issue that happens and the bushings holding the shaft in place could be worn and the shaft wobbles around a bit, again causing the lobes to whack the mag pick-up. I've had both issues.
I snooped around and bought a used one that ended up working fine. If the bucks are there ,perhaps contact Mark and give his new system a go.

Also, remove the distributor cap and make sure your rotor isn't coming apart. We had the distributor cap on the Lemons racer completely blow apart due to a faulty rotor.

Denise,

Are you sure it wasn't a good rotor spun to excessive RPMs?

now I understand the 7 lap life of the motor
As for the original post, don't run the engine until you remove the cap and inspect it otherwise plan on buying some new parts

Remove the cap and rotor. See if the distributor shaft has and play in it. If so, rebuild or replace. Buy a new cap and rotor no matter what. Once they start hitting, the damage has started and they are paper weights.

That's probably it! You might as well replace both the cap and rotor and try it out.
