I feel bad for you late model owners......
cause I just pulled apart a '79 parts car today and it easily had twice the rubber hoses in the engine bay as my '74 does. The sheer amount of smog equipment on these cars is disgusting. I imagine it's a maintenance nightmare as well. I'm glad my car was made before all of that.
Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
don't worry about most of us. Just feel bad for those in California or those who must pass emissions tests. I yanked that garbage off just to get it running and it will never ever go back.
Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
BTW, if any California guys need emissions stuff, i have a whole bunch to send your way. Luckily I live in Kentucky where for the most part anything goes. Catalytic converter? Whats that? EGR? Nope!

is there an age cut off in Cali where you no long have to bend over backwards to save the planet? In KY if a car is over 25 years old it's exempt form just about everything, which is a good and bad thing. the good thing is cars over 25 years old that weren't sold here can be imported and I can install what ever safety and cosmetic upgrades I want, the downside is i have no incentive to make the car safer other than wanting to save my own butt.
Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
cars 76 and newer have to undergo smog checks every two years or on change of ownership. Each year a legislator introduces a bill to force all vehicles to require smog checks. SEMA has been instrumental in helping defeat that legislation each year. Luckily, the custom car/restoration trade is pretty organized in fighting those bills

I cant believe my eyes. California is less restrictive than Utah! In Utah (certain parts) if you have a '68 or newer vehicle it needs to undergo a smog check. So Cal Mark wrote:cars 76 and newer have to undergo smog checks every two years or on change of ownership. I wouldn't mind moving back to KY, just no grandkids there, at least not my grandkids, I think? yeah not mine. I have to have my 77's carb retuned every year to pass the Utah smog.
Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
Hey, thanks for the condolences...It sure is a lot of hose . Every time I pop the hood I wonder how to go about removing what's left of my pollution control mess. Some of my cars emmision control stuff has been removed or plugged, but not all of it. The car runs well, but it sure is crowded on the left hand side. I'm hoping to find an 1800 intake and replace the carb., meantime I'm trying to be patient with the mess I've got now .
Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
I took my 79 and put on an earlier model intake and carb. Got rid of EVERYTHING on the left side of the engine bay. The technicolor hoses are now gone. Well, the're in a box in the garage anyway. Never know. I found that the car ran smoother but I never noticed any power increase in doing so. Oh yeah, no smog here in TX either.

Re: I feel bad for you late model owners......
All that smog crap dissapeared in 1980 for California bound Spiders and all of them in 1981 when they went to FI. My first Spider was a 79 California car and I couldn't believe the difference in performance when I got my FI 82. So don't feel bad for all the late modes owners, only those before 1980.
