My was sitting for 2 years, what should I be sure to check?

Post by hdhracerx »

My 73 was running and driving before it was parked outside and left for a couple of years.

It runs and drives now - with weak brake action, no wipers, and some caliper rubbing in the front right. It lurches with low throttle launches, and one of the tires is a bit flat-spotted from sitting low on air for a part of that time, but otherwise seems to drive really nicely.

Is there a general tune up check list for these somewhere here that I haven't found by searching?

Cosmetically, it just needs some more cleaning and polishing.

Thanks!

I would decide how long it had a timing belt change and consider doing that. Also, it may be adviseable to replace the tires. Letting them sit flat for 3 years probably isn't good for the sidewalls and may cause a blow out.

change all of the fluids. look closely at fuel hoses for cracks, inspect the flex coupler on the driveshaft

Check everything that's rubber. Replace your timing belt and tensioner bearing! Replace all fluids. Don't just bleed the brakes, flush them till the fluid looks new. Clean any corrosion on your battery cable ends. Replace your radiator cap. Spray PB Blaster on all your cables and work them quite a bit. Keep spraying a little at a time till they move smoothly.

If your tires feel strange, replace them. I've seen fenders mauled badly from steel belted radials wipping around at 70mph.

received my manual - stoked!

began to really clean and inspect things mentioned above

this week is updating electrical, any suspect hoses, belts etc... have an errant taillight housing so picking one up locally for $135 (ouch!) that should fix that small issue. Threw away the garbage mirrors and searching for black ray dots tonight. Found some dusty NOS oil filters at my local auto parts store and purchased them both. Head gaskets are seeping a bit too, so they're in for a change soon. Have a short shift kit to install too.

Tires seem ok, but likely will attack the whole wheel and tire thing at once.

Brakes have to be my main focus - the rest of the car seems really solid so far - touch wood.

Once this list is checked I'll need to replace the steering wheel with my fat Dino I've been saving and get all the dash electrical, seat belts, and roll bar sorted.
