World Cup Soccer
World Cup Soccer
Don't seem to be too many soccer fans on the west coast. The US team has an excellent chance of advancing to the finals. At this time it is tied one to one with England ( a favored team). GO USA

Not too many on the west coast? Take a drive down Commercial in Van... likely much the same as the Italian community in Montreal. Pubs and cultural centers are open early in the am for the patrons. Around here its the English ex pats and portugal orchardists/grape growers Perhaps Father G could chime in as to whats happening in the Italian community for the games.
Watched todays game much to the wife's chagrin. Good chances from both sides but I thought the brits had a few more better ones. The US should do well in the other matches though.
Gotta love the beautiful game, just wish my knees were'nt knackered

Re: World Cup Soccer
I didn't get to see the USA - UK match, as we were attending our daughter's graduation exercises this morning. I planned ahead and taped it, and decided not to listen to any news or radio, since I didn't want to hear the score. Halfway through the presentation, the keynote speaker stopped for a second and told the audience that he had some news from South Africa, for any of us out there that didn't have an I-phone: US and UK had played to a 1 - 1 tie! He had been keeping up with the match on his phone, while he was delivering his speech!

Just about everybody I know is tuned in to the World Cup.
My prediction...Spain and either Brazil or England in the final. Many would think England a long shot. but their coaching will get them organized.

Re: World Cup Soccer
although soccer may be the sport of the world, it ranks just below woman's College softball here in the US. There may be some national pride to follow the sport here during the World Cup, one second after the closing ceremony, it will be banished to ESPN 12. You know ESPN 12...the channel that shows old Harlem Globtrotter games when Meadowlark Lemon was playing with them.

Look who's wearing soccer colored glasses. But your right, I wait up late at night to get the soccer scores on the sports programs. LOL, There are too many pro sports in America to ever let soccer advance.
Americas most invisible sport..soccer. Soccer may be bigger in Lower California and Lower Florida because of the immigrants who grew up with the game and have an intense passion for it. But that is mostly regional and localized.
To tell you how bad it is, I would rather watch womens curling from Canada than soccer.
World Series
NBA Finals
Stanley Cup
Super Bowl
Do we have a soccer league here?
I am semi-teasing you guys. But its really not a much viewed sport here.

Re: World Cup Soccer
For those that have been watching the World Cup, at least in Canada, there has been an Adidas commercial advertising some football boot, and there is a sports car flashing across the screen 2-3 times. I think it might be a Fiat Spider, but there isnt enough time to really take it in for me.
Anybody seen that?

Re: World Cup Soccer
I'm always amused when people start bashing football, then rave about wasting 3 hrs watching baseball and hoping to see a perfect game, where nothing happens
Re: World Cup Soccer
I don't know... a perfect game usually means lots of good defensive plays. I can't say I'm a huge fan of watching baseball as I'd much rather be playing than watching. I'm sorry though, I'd much rather sit through 10 perfect games than watch a ball fly from one side of the futbol field to another with the hopes of maybe seeing a gooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaall! Let's face it, if sports are exciting to watch, then they're usually fairly popular. Like mentioned earlier, people that watch and love soccer usually have some type of international or secular connection to it.
