I was thinking about adding a turbo to my spyder( I have a friend that owns a turbo shop...) It really got me thinking. Does any 1 have any good #s on what some of the parts can take hp/torque wise. I am going to take a wild guess here and say that the limiting factors would be the clutch and the trany. Most likly some internals. The heads look like they would take to super/turbo charging nicely with a new valve train.
then again how strong is the crank and rods? could they take 200 hp and trips into the 8k rpm range? ( assuming a good set of light wieght froged pistons)

Like Mark said, check out http://www.turbo124.com. The crazy Aussy there have done most anything you can think of.
The tranny is definitely a weak point. The Abarth rally spiders (correct me if I am wrong) used the beefer 131 gearboxes, to install this in a normal spider requires some modification to get the shifter to come out in the correct location.
The two names that come to mind are James Seabolt and Jim Fierst. Both have put turbos on their otherwise stock 2.0l, but both are only running around 6-8psi boost giving approx. 120-130 whp.
Again, check turbo124.com forums for all the specifics. Some guys over there try to get 500hp out of Fiat TCs...

Let's put the big hp numbers into perspective; If you are able to produce 200 NA or force fed hp in a Spider, it will be enough to launch the car into orbit. Even paltry 140 at the wheels will put a giant grin on your face as long as it is hooked up. And that is key, getting the power transfered to the pavement. These are not insignificant figures. When you get over 200, 300, in a 124 Spider? On the street?... Just pause for a moment.
Making the power isn't the problem. What you should really "hope" for is to make it drivable. You can probably make well above 300 hp NA and drive it hard... once. Bring your broom and pallet along for the ride. Making it last and making it user friendly adds a whole new dimension to it. This should be a priority. I don't doubt your man in AUS was able to wrench a lot of power NA out of his 16V 2.0. 215 is usually the high side for those motors NA. 275 sounds more than a bit optimistic but if he did in fact get this then good on him.

A turbo will get you what you after more easily than stringing out a motor NA. The stock crank is fine as are the rods but you won't want to spin it more than 7000 rpm. More importantly, with a force fed system you won't need to.
Forged rods would be a better choice of course. You'll need forged pistons with a lower and wider spaced ring pack as well as proper lubrication and a good engine management system.
A basic system with low boost wont require lots of extra mods but don't labour under the illusion that that junk yard compressor you slap on will whip up an instant "300 hp". That'll require a bit of the above and more than a few dead presidents...
lol Joe, i've never driven anything close to 300hp! im just saying with the 16v there is much more potential, and if you only want 300 the 8 valve will do just fine, and you wont have to extensively modify everything, including exhaust, firewall, etc... you just need to beef up the internals
mind you the my 16v NA will not be a slap-together job. also it wont be in a spider, it will be in a much stiffened coupe. the goal is to compete (on the track) with a friend's fully prepped e30 m3, producing 325+.. the prepped coupe is about 250lbs lighter, so it should be a good match.

as Joe mentioned, the management system will be key to making that kind of power and making it last. The street racer crowd has done lots of research into the Aisan cars and even those systems are pretty darn pricey to make that kind of hp. Big turbos, big injectors, external waste gates, 22 lbs of boost, intercoolers and stand alone management systems are all needed.
Unless your mission is the world's fastest Fiat, there are lots of other cars/engines that have had all of the research already completed (translates to cheaper)

mabey i am a bit of a bore, but only one phrase comes to mind when i here about 200+ hp cars. "power to weight ratio"hopefully those of us that are performance oriented chose the spider because of light weight front engine rear drive and simple construction... the spider has all the above and lots of potential. a lotus elise is one of the fastest cars availiable , yet has only a paultry 190 hp toyota engine. its peformance also comes from total tuning. for instance figure out where your engine was designed to make power. now build on what engineers spend countless dollers to design. now cut the weight . balance it front to rear best you can. and short of a one off suspension , get the widest r compound tire you can fit under the wheel wells. now stomp the accelorator and enjoy that fat usable power band..
well, I am one of the idiots on the turbo124 site.. but I am not going boost. I decided that a nice NA 16v 2.0 would get me pretty close to 200 without overly stressing the engine OR having to worry about lag. In a car that weighs as little as the spider does... that is more than enough for me.
