I hate thieves!
I hate thieves!
Last night someone came on my property and stole my F150 tail gate right in front of the garage that had it's lights on.
I would like to get a hold of them. I can't say what I would like to do. I will say I have a $500 deductable and it will cost about $1700 to replace it.
I had Fiat doors, hoods and parts resting against the car next to the truck. So I know it wasn't a scrap person.

Don't that beat all!
We had a spate of catalytic converter thefts from trucks and 4 x 4's until Maryland passed a law requiring scrap dealers to keep records of catalysts purchased. (Of course, we also had a rash of manhole covers stolen from city streets for scrap , as well as a high school stadium stripped of its steel bleachers for the same reason )
Hey maybe you could find a conversion dealer that has a make/model/color tailgate in their yard. Or even a salvage yard, and pocket the difference from $1700. Can you obtain pilfer-proof screws to attach this new one? That would give you time, while the next thieves are busy trying to figure it out, to get 'ol rustbucket out of the closet (where did I put those # 7's?) and introduce yourself to your new acquaintances.

Re: I hate thieves!
Thats a lot of money for a tail gate. I remember way back when I had my first spider. Living with mom still so it sat in the driveway at night, my sisters brand new M G sat in front of it next to the house and my bedroom window. Got up one mornin after it rained and went to leave, saw the top was down on the M G and went back and yelled at my sister. She swore she put it up so we both went out and the top and frame were gone, along with lots of trim and interior parts. Funny thing is my spider wasnt locked and i had a thousand doller sound system in it and it wasnt touched.
A few days later my sis was driving her M G and saw an older M G with all these new parts on it and the chase was on, they got away.

Re: I hate thieves!
I have a 2006 F150 with only 44,000 miles. I called Ford to get the estimate. They said they had to get the shell and the insides. They don't come as one. Plus paint, handle with lock, emblems, and inside liner. I have a $500 deductable so it wouldn't be worth going to the junk yard or to buy a used one. That would be almost $500 itself. This goes under vandalism and wouldn't make my insurance go up. So I think I'd have to go for the new one.

That sucks, a few years ago some tweaker broke out the window of my almost new truck to steal the six burned CDs in it and the plug to my Tom Tom. Glass everywhere and jacked up my door panel for $5.00 (maybe)worth of stuff. Hope you catch the scum bag.

Those rotten b**tar*s.
There are very few things in this world that make me feel as vulnerable or as impotent as I feel when I get ripped-off. I feel your pain.
I live in what we lovingly refer to as "The Ghetto". Which, given that I lvie in Utah, is actually a really nice neighborhood. But over the years we've had our share of thefts. I think the first was with my first Spider back in 1987. Doors unlocked, but the thief wasn't smart enough to check, he just slasahed the top. Tore the crap out of the dash trying to remove the stereo, and then took my cassettes. (before CD's! )
Right now I make my living selling, among other things, copper building wire. All over the country there's been a rash of dumb-a**es stealing copper wire from constructions sites, or in many cases right off of buildings in-use. And it never fails, sooner-or-later you can read the story about somebody being electrocuted when they grab ahold of the wrong wire to pull it out of the building. I'm not a guy who would ever wish that on anyone, but there is a certain amount of irony to it.
Watch Ebay for that tailgate of yours!

Re: I hate thieves!
Oh that sucks. Samething happened to my friend's S-10 twice. They stole it the gate about a month later we found one in the junk lot that was the same color and replaced. 6 months after that it was stole also. He now just uses a net.
I know how it feels also my beloved Nissan Sentra that was my main car for 6 years and a back and forth to work car for 10 years was broken into 3 times.
First time it happen the cars was only 3 weeks old. They broke passanger window and stole a PILLOW in the back seat.
Right before X-mas 5 or 6 years ago someone else broke the passanger window and stole radio. It looked like a nice radio but was not a CD player. It was coldest day of the year and I had to drive 250 miles with no side window.
3 Years ago a friend my friend with the S-10 was borrowing it while his truck was down and some broke the passanger window again. and just rummaged through the glove box. Nothing stolen.
The first time I brought the car to a dealer in LA to replace the glass (cost $200). The other 2 times I went to a junk lot and found windows and replaced it myself. So I have spent close to $300 to replace windows becasue someone stole a pillow that cost maybe $10 and a used stero i got off of a friend for $10.

Re: I hate thieves!
I just found out that my ex who is building a house in the same town caught the thieves on tape that same night going through what they could there. The police was able to get three finger prints. The tape needs an expert examination. It's a little blurry. They were in their twenties. They were pointing at some things as if they were going to come back. Her boyfriend is an ex-cop and is waiting for them. I guess he plans on giving them some buck shot. I hope they find my tail gate first.
Re: I hate thieves!
The easiest way to prevent theft is to keep the tailgate locked at night. That's what the dealers do to keep them from disappearing.

Yeah, I usually did lock it. The funny thing about this whole thing is about a week before it was taken. I drempt I was washing my truck and the tail gate started to come off. If I could only read dreams.
