New to forum...fixing up 82 Spider...
Been working on and off on a 1982 Fiat Spider for about two years ...was sitting in a garage for about 6 years prior to me getting it.
Things done a year ago:
- replace plugs and wires
- replace cap and rotor button
- replace air filter
- took out gas tank and POR 15'd it!
- replace fuel filter
- replace fuel lines (ones attached to the gas tank/filter)
- replace fuel sending unit
- replace ignition switch (holy crap)
- broke into trunk, drill hole where liscense plate goes (missing key)
Stoppped working on it because would not run...bearly idled with thottle all the way down (really rough)
Things done last week
- got it started (yeah)
- rebuilt front calipers
- replace radiator cap
Things to be done with parts currently have:
- finish rebuilding rear calipers
- replace rotor and brake pads
- install SS break hoses install
- replace master cylinder
- replace rear brake line rounded one of the flare nuts trying to rebuild rear caliper
- replace radiator hoses/thermostat
- replace tires
- replace tie rod ends
- replace antifreeze/flush cooling system
- replace oil/filter
- replace radiator fan switch
Things to be done eventually:
- re-seal differintial (sp?) (gasket or just permatex?)
- install oil guard
- install working radio (IPOD capatible) got to have by LED ZEPPLIN
- install washer fluid resivoir
- replace timing belt/tensioner
- figure a way to rig a realase for trunk or replace trunk lock
- change trans oil and differitital oil
- research mods and apply if useful

Hi D, welcome to the forum. Congratulations on getting your 82 going again. You are now a member of the "82 Is The Best Year Spider Ever Made" club. I didn't see the flex coupler (guibo) on your list, I'd do a close check on yours. You definitely wouldn't want it to fail on you.
My 82 had sat for five years prlor to my getting it, and it didn't suffer any ill affects from it. So I think you're going to be very pleased with your new car.

found out what it is... it is a drive shaft flex joint...will defnitly check it while I am under the car!!!

It's the rubber donut at the front of the driveshaft. It could be very bad if it came apart, causing the driveshaft to go through the tranny tunnel and possibly injuring passengers.

I want to thank everyone on this forum for posting great info!!!
Last week I replaced the timing belt and tensioner...I would not have been able to get crank shaft nut off (or torqing it back on) if I had not read about someones trick of feeding a rope into one of the cyclinders....I owe you a beer!!!!
I replaced the flex disc based on the feed back provived...it definitly needed it!!! see attached pics!
I am also attaching pic of the car ...I'll try and take some better ones when I am not so worn out!!!

That Guibo certainly was near its end. Its never good when you can see through a part in between the holes...

Congrat's on joining the '82 club. Smart of you to move into the eventually list quickly. Basic running and safety are first. That flex disk had at least 0.021 miles left in it!

Nice project car and good to see how thorough you are being in going through it's systems. My own experience, having owned a `77 for now 22 years, is that with a thorough going over they can truly become reliable machines - at least for weekend driving. Mine, after the original do-over, ran trouble free for many years only requiring oil changes and tires.
I would make one recommendation though... Skip the radio and put in a good sounding exhaust system. Led Zep is great dut it doesn't compare with the music your Spider is capable of making.

Great looking 82. I think there was a question in there - re-seal differintial (sp?) (gasket or just permatex?). These cars have a gasket that you can pick up cheap. Pretty easy job. Also, it is great to see your going through all the systems. You have a lot of parts on hand to replace items. Are all those itmes not working currently. For Example, the master cylinder or the fan switch? My very wise, off the boat from Italy, grandfather used to say "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".
