They actually teach salesmen that trait? I thought they were born with it.
I worked for car dealerships for over 20 years doing warranty and writing service. These two jobs are exact opposites. Doing warranty work requires you to be able to sniff out the mechanics that are pencil whipping a ticket or trying to cheat the manufacturer. Writing service is a salesman's job. With my warranty background, I was the customers favorite service writer because I made sure the customer didn't get taken advantage of. I was not a mechanic's best friend, however.

Re: Why are car dealers so sleazy?
I really don't like car dealers either. My first car was a 69 124 Sport Coupe I bought used in 1971. One of the selling points the salesman made was that it came with a 90 day warranty. I was driving the car a few weeks later and went over a pot hole and all of a sudden the car sounded like the muffler fell off. I took it to the dealer and asked him to fix it because it was still under warranty. He said I should show him a copy of the warranty and he would fix it. Of course I was young and trusted the salesman so I never got anything in writing. I gave the manager a piece of my mind and stormed out. From that day on anytime any of my friends talked about buying a car I told them to stay away from that dealer and to get everything in writing. In retrospect that small lesson early on saved me a lot over the years. Turned out there was a small weld holding the 2 down pipes together and it broke and popped out. I pulled it off and took it to a welder and got it fixed for a few bucks. That was the first time I ever did any work on a car and it gave me the courage to try other things as they came up. And now I get EVERYTHING in writing.
Oh,and Denise, I have never heard the phrase "pencil whipped a ticket" before. How about a short explaination?

Lesson For The Day: Pencil whipping a ticket is when a technician writes a long summary of what he did to repair a problem, hoping to get more time out of it than what warranty would normally pay. Case in point:Zippy wrote: Oh,and Denise, I have never heard the phrase "pencil whipped a ticket" before. How about a short explaination?
If replacing a head gasket on a Fiat 1608 TC, he would say:
R&R left and right cam covers,R&$ radiator to gain access to crankshaft bolt for removal to r&r timing belt. R&R left and right cam boxes, intake manifold and exhaust manifold. Remove head and clean old gasket material, straight edge head and block, grind mating surfaces.
An experienced warranty admin knows what replacing a head gasket entails and will pay accordingly. An inexperienced one will think it necessary to pay for every little step that was written and charge warranty twice as much as it should be.

I wish I could say that. I was so happy that I learned something new as well but I slept since then and forgot other things so now I think I am just even.Zippy wrote:Denise,
