Timing belt replacement 82 FI

Post by joephish »

I am looking for some help in replacing the timing belt on Junior. I have all the hoses off and the radiator out. Do I have to pull the crank pulley or can I get the cover off and wiggle it on. Also are there any pics of the timing marks etc. I did see something on the web from this forum but it was a few years old. It had pics and a copy of the manual.

Thanks for your help.

Are the timing belt shields still in place?

Yes the shields are still on. I have see some posts saying that you can put the belt on without removing the crank pulley. It seems to be impossible to do. Also what size socket do I need to take the pulley off?

By now most cars have had the inner shield removed. The belt can be threaded past the tight spots, no need to remove the pulley. I've had the belt off of my 82 a couple times and never had the pulley off. The crank pulley nut is 38mm, but 1-1/2"SAE is equivalent. You'll need to turn the engine over a couple of times while tensioning the new belt, and while it can be done by applying pressure on the alternator belt and turning the alternator pulley, it's easier to do with the crank pulley, so you may want to get the socket anyway. My Booklands manual doesn't say to remove the pulley btw.
Also, if you hadn't planned on it, it is usually a good idea to replace the tensioner bearing if it hasn't been done recently. Mine sounded and felt fine, but it fell apart while removing it from the bracket. I can't remember now why we were taking it off at the time, but I'm glad we did.

With the shields on,I don't know how one can replace the belt. I just did it on an 80 with the shields and had to take the crank pulley off to get at the last 10 mm nut behind it that was holding a shield on. When the shields are off though I can change without taking the crank pully off. I do undo the 10 mm bolt on the one side of the timing marker so I can "fold" it out of the way. Like Ron said a bit fiddly but very doable (if the shields are off)

I wish to thank all for their help in replacing the timing belt on Junior. Once I cut off the metal shroud from the front of the engine all went really easy. I fond a copy of the Fiat manual procedures for 2000cc engines online and it made thing go faster. If anyone wants a copy I can email it to you.

Once again the forum comes to the rescue.

Thanks.
