Weird Problem

Post by Kev659 »

Ok so i have had a weird problem with my 79 spider. After about 30 or more min of driving ill pull up tp a stop light and the car will just putter out. It starts right back up and then by the next red light it will do it again. I have a volt meter set up to see if the voltage to the charging system is working and all seems good. Any thoughts?

I had a thunderbird that did the same thing. It was the ignition module. I took it to the shop three times and they could never figure it out until it died.

The entire ignition system is band new from the battery to the plugs. Ill check it anyway.

usually a bad module will result in a no-start until it cools down. I'd look at the carb and intake; check for any vacuum leaks or an idle control solenoid that is dodgy or loose

Sounds very familiar, I had the same issue. I'm assuming you have the old stock water chokecarb? It would drive fine for about 15 minutes and then it would want to stall out at lights or when I came to a stop! Annoying issue.

My mechanic told me to have it rebuilt but I decided to just spend a little more for a better carb and bought a new: Weber 32/36 DFEV, best thing I ever did, nice reliable upgrade!

As for what's the problem, not sure I would check the idle-stop solenoid as Mark suggested.
