LED direct replacement of bulbs...

Post by radiopilot »

Hello everyone... If you've been looking at replacing the hot incandescent bulb (which causes fogging in the instruments, etc.)... I now will be in the process of getting direct LED replacements for these bulbs... no need to rewire anything on the car or connectors or adding voltage/current limiters to use these LED's bulbs as they are a direct plug in with the correct voltage and they fit the instrument light sockets...

They're not too expensive (approx. 2-3 times the cost of incandescent bulbs) but will last 100,000's of hours compared to approx. 2000-3000 hours of incandescents.

Plus these bulbs will be able to be dimmed using the dimmer rheostat. The LED bulbs are also for all the side and tail lights as well...

I will let everyone know when they arrive and how well they perform as my Spider will be the test car.

Nick,
I did the full LED bulb replacement as part of my restoration.
Unfortunately the cooler LED bulbs have not completely solved the fogging gauges issue - significantly improved it, but not cured it in my case.
On the plus side, the "brightness" of the instruments is improved.

Great. :D

One note... before you put everything together did you clean the crystal completely? The crystal will have a residue from the manufacturing process and will attract ions (water, dust, etc) and unless you do a thorough cleaning along with anti-static/anti-fogging solution the lenses on the inside will fog. Another option is to drill several breather holes on the top and bottom of the gauges to allow humidity to escape... but it must be protected to not allow dust and dirt to get into the gauge... also it does not stop the 'lint' problem without the above cleaning solutions.

The LED's I'm lining up will have many colours so the instruments lighting can be changed at the whim of the owner... that would be the coolest of all the mods on the dash.

Anxiously awaiting the results and the resulting kit. I am also considering sending you all my gauges over the winter when I hit the end of driving season.

George,

I should be able to get LEDs on the gauges then and considering you mentioned a custom look for the gauges the LEDs will compliment the look...

The LEDs are custom ordered at this point for testing purposes... I would have to initiate a large order to justify the minimum costs... since all the lights on the cars (right now Fiats, Ferrari, Panteras, Alfas, Maserattis, etc. that I work on) minus the headlights would be changed to LEDs there would be quite a bit of LEDs to order.

A lot of owners are looking at LEDs because they last longer and are less a draw on current especially for those with small altenators (less than 65 amps) and they look cool too (LEDs are currently going to replace compact flourescents and filament bulbs in the future).

Hi Nick,
I'm in. Just let me know what it cost's and I'll send you the funds. Will they sell as a a kit? Say dash lights, marker lights or will everything be in one package? Any idea what this will cost? I like the idea of brighter lights. Will they also replace the tail lamps? Brighter will be better.
Any word on my clocks? Thanks, George

The cost will be inbedded with gauge restoration/clock restoration albeit the price of the clock/gauge restoration would go up accordingly to the extra costs of the LEDs.

The tail lights would also be LED's (amber and white/yellow)... the LEDs would be sold as 'instrument gauge light kits, 'entire exterior light kits', 'tail light/license plate light kits' or 'front turn indicator light kits'. Once I get the costs for the LEDS in mass quantities+shippings costs to me I can divide the costs into reasonable prices for all. :D

The gears come in this week and Friday you should have 2 clocks... I'm out of town for today through Wednesday and will be back to work on these instruments... :)
