A new noise from my car has developed. It sounds like its coming from the driver's side rear wheel, a kind of rhythmic noise that doesn't go away when I apply brakes. It does vary with speed. I recently changed the differential oil, so I doubt that's it. There's no evidence of tire rub and the shocks are less than 1 yr old.
Any suggestions? Wheel bearings?
Thanks.
Noise coming from rear wheel area
Re: Noise coming from rear wheel area
if it varies with speed. It must be doing its thing every single revolution. could be a small thing like a bulge in the tire. You could actually have a screw or bolt in the tire. I have personally had a strange noise that was rythemetic and It was a screw in the tire. Then I'd hope its not in the differential. I'd switch the particular side with the front and see if its the same problem. Then I'd look into the rearend.

Jack up the offending wheel and spin it by hand. If there's no noise, inspect the tire. Try to wobble the tire side to side and top to bottom. If there's free play (if it wobbles), it's likely a bearing. If there is a noise, try to isolate it.

Found it! The e-brake cable had gotten bumped from behind it's spot, and the wheel balancing weight was rubbing against it. I don't remember messing with that cable recently, but there it was. I took the opportunity to adjust the e-brake while I was down there screwing around.
I like easy fixes.
Sorry George, no sale.
