Hello from over the (smaller) pond
Hi to all. My name is Colin & I am located in Worcester in the UK - for those unfamiliar, its a cathedral city roughly in the middle of England. I have an 81 (built) Spider 2000 which I have owned for about 4 & a half years. This is my second Spider having previously owned another 81 car almost exactly the same, the only real difference being the first was metallic green, the current is plain red & 25 years between!
Before I describe the current car, I must express my thanks to all who have posted extremely helpful information for those like me who who have a car that when you ask a mechanic or need parts you get the answer "what's one of those", "never heard of it" or "not listed in my catalog or computer". I confess I came across the board when researching for radiator hoses & this is where I found the part numbers I needed. So thanks again.
My car, as introduced, is an 81 2 liter, fuel injected, pretty much in original form & has done in the region of 150k miles. The body color is red & has the original paintwork, except for the trunk lid (boot as we say in England), which has been repainted following a supermarket incident involving the original owner. Unfortunately, time probably has taken its toll & you can just see the different paintwork. Otherwise bodywork is fine. Mechanically its possibly better than what you would expect on a 30 year old, 150k miler, the engine runs well & doesn't seem to use oil. The f.i. system seems to behave itself now, having had one or two new bits added. Had a hell of a scare when an injection hose split while driving, squirting fuel over the alternator - fortunately didn't catch fire. The cause was the regulator which had seized, resulting in high fuel pressure when decellerating or idling. In fact, when I bought the car, it was running rich on idle & the problem was not diagnosed by the so called bosch injection specialists - almost a year later the hose split. The only major area of concern I have is the transmission, which the previous owner had rebuilt & I have my doubts (judging from the comments in the cars file) that the shop didn't know too much about this fiat box & I suspected that they made the mistake of using EP oil - so the first thing done was to replace with ZC90. I only know too well about the transmission from experiences 30 years ago. Thats a separate story.
The car originally came from San Diego (CA) where it seems to have regularly commuted up & down Interstate 5. It was then bought by a Portugese fellow & he shipped it to Germany in the mid 90's. I bought it from him just over 4 years ago & it now lives in England. I was hoping to be able to spend time with it, but a major house renovation project got in the way, both time & cash wise. Having taken a pause from (re)construction work, I am now trying to catch up on a few bits & pieces with the car - replacing the water pump at the moment & looking into a new top. I don't have any recent photos to share & the car is not photogenic at present, but here's a couple taken just after I drove the car back from Germany. If I've followed the instructions correctly the link is
If this doesn't work then would appreciate someone putting me straight - my computer skills are not as good my my kids & they are not here at the moment to sort me out.
So thanks for allowing me on board - hopefully I will be able to contribute something as well as picking up the useful advice.
Colin

Colin - Welcome here! The car looks great and it has an interesting history. You are fortunate to have a car like this to use on the terrific roads in your country. Enjoy!

Re: Hello from over the (smaller) pond
Hi Colin. Great looking car, and you have managed to keep it left hand drive. Is there an issue there in jolly-old with having to swap to right hand after time or can one just keep the wheel on the left?
As you mentioned, this is a terrific place to access info and parts for these cars. I seem to remember some time ago there are a few spiders in England and I believe a couple north of you the other side of the wall Hadrian built. Having spent a bit of time in the south years ago, I did enjoy the installation fluid one can find there.
Hope you enjoyed the weather you had recently and got out and played in the snow. (sounded kind of hellish actually)
Top down weather is comming
Chris

Re: Hello from over the (smaller) pond
Hi Colin and welcome,
Good to have some more Europeans here at the forum. I buy most of my parts on eBay in Germany and the UK, so maybe we can share our experiences with different vendors. And I know exactly what you mean when it comes to mechanics - the most common phrases are "Is it an Alfa Romeo?" or "I have never worked on this model before" (which just tells me this will not be the first time...). Since I bought my car in the UK, it had been serviced by DTR somewhere in the London area, apparently a highly respected garage specialized in Fiat Spiders and other Italianos.
Yours seems to be a nice looking car, the Spider must be excellent on all these small Engling countryside roads. Guess most of the snow is gone now, so it's getting time to fill up.

Re: Hello from over the (smaller) pond
Thanks Peter, Chris & Bjorn for the welcome. We seem to be having something in common besides Spiders at the moment & that is the cold weather. Its been colder than usual in the UK this winter - we had temperatures as low as minus 18 celsius (0 deg F) before Christmas as well as snow that shut most things down for a week. So roll on Easter time when its worth getting the car dusted down.
There's no problem with Left Hand Drive in the UK as far as the authorities are concerned though insurance is usually more expensive. However, being a classic, the annual cost for me is less than £200 with a 6k milage limit - so not too bad. The second car I owned in the UK was a left hander & I spent a few years in the US (where I had my first Spider) so LHD seems quite normal.
Parts for the Spider have not really been a problem, the fuel injection parts are off the shelf - the longest I had to wait was next day as too are alternator parts & I also obtained a replacement starter pretty easily. The hoses were obtained from Germany & delivered in 3 days. My next challenge is to locate a quality soft top.
There are several Spiders around in the UK, but as yet I haven't had chance to meet up with anyone else & I've yet to see one on the road in my neck of the woods. I understand DTR is well respected as is Guy Croft & Middle Barton Garage - which isn't too far away. The latter did some work on the car soon after I bought it.
So here's hoping the wether improves and the Spiders can come out to play.
Cheers
Colin

Hi Colin,
I am new on this forum too, I only live a few miles down the road from you at Evesham, however I am hoping to get my 1982 Pininfarina Spider on the road this spring following a full baremetal respray and restoration. Some of the interior may have to wait as it is not too bad and I cannot wait to drive it.
The previous owner started to restore it following cross member problems, but gave up with the engine ,front suspension and interior dismantled and stored in various locations all over Gloucestershire. It took me three days to get 98% of the parts together and then the past year repairing some of the previous owners 'manufactured' parts. I will try and post some horror pictures as soon a I can figure it out. His restoration stopped 10 years ago and was put into storage so you can imagine the problems.
As I said, I have not driven it yet, but look forward to doing so very soon. Perhaps we can have,at least, a 2 car Spider convoy around the Malvern Hills.
A big thank you to all on this forum as whilst I have not posted before, the help and answers posted to members questions from everyone has been invaluable .
Regards,
Ian

Re: Hello from over the (smaller) pond
Hi Ian,
I haven't seen many Spiders in the UK (none in the flesh that I can recall) & what do you know - at least two in Worcestershire! I believe there may be at least one other in the vicinity according to a guy in Kidderminster who did some work on my Spider's FI system. It appears you have a fair sized project on your hands & it looks great so far - keep up the good work. What red is it? Mine is (mostly) Rosso Cherry 134 - wish I could get touch up paint for all the stone dings etc. as I'm not ready for a new paint job yet. There are a few things that need doing however, but don't seem to get much time as renovation of an old house gets priority over renovation of the car.
I'm new to the forum too & I haven't yet worked out or know if you can send a pm. If you know a way, then we can exchange details. Malvern would be a great place to start - roll on better weather!

Many thanks for the welcome & for the vey useful help you & others post for novices like me. One day, hopefully, I'll try to get my Spider looking half as good as yours & the other suberb examples on this board. First I need to find time before I get too old & some warmer weather - there are some times I wish I was back in Texas, its still pretty cold here in England.

Texas has had their fair share of snow this year. It's been a crazy weather year for us all. It's good to know that no matter where we are in the world we seem to have the same affection for our Fiats. Great to have such a vast pool to inspire and be inspired.
