seems that's a big no-no posting stuff that otherwise costs money to get. i mean, how many people would actually buy a user manual or repair manual from fleebay or amazon if it was available as a download?
not the way i like it, IMHO knowlege is public good, but seems that in this predominantly US oriented forum stuff just doesn't work that way. i won't be the one to break that unwriten rule, but if someone of the staff decides it's ok, than i will post links to everything that's available.

The issue is one of copyright. If an individual shares a page or two, that's ok, but the publisher still holds the license and publishing rights to the material so wholesale copying is forbidden by law. Just like downloading music or whatever from the free sites. A lot of folks got fined for that sort of thing. That's why vendors like IAP and others have them for sale. I bought mine more than 25 years ago from the Fiat dealership. Glad to share a page or two for folks in need

i don't think that fiat would sue you, or anyone for that matter, for distributing a copy of their workshop manual from 30 years ago. i believe they haven't even copyrighted it. it was internal document of fiat SPA, meant for their service stations to use.
however, it's entirely possible that someone outthere has copyrighted it later.

IMHO, service manuals for vintage cars should be free for all to download. i will share what i've got, because i firmly believe in freedom of information. if administrators of this forum feel uncomfortable with me posting links for download here, i won't do it but no one can stop me from sharing manuals via email.

again, i must state that i do not have a body repair manual for 124 spider, and that i'm still looking for one. all i have is a single page with body dimensions in detail. no pages with dimensions of specific panels

The way copyright works is that no part may be redistributed, it doesn't matter if it is a page or the entire book itself. The manual is copyrighted (at least the one that I have is) and clearly states that inside the front cover. "All rights reserved - This book may not be reproduced in whole or in part without the express permission of Fiat Motors of North America, Inc."

Not quite true, there is international copyright law, and while it would be impractical to do anything about it, action could be taken, just not a probable situation (unless you live in a country that refuses to adhere to anyone else's copyrights ex. China). I agree that information should be free to an extent, and a 30 year old shop manual should be accessible. However, all of us agreeing does not make it legal. Incidentally, the "idiotic" copyright laws of the US are nothing compared to those of the EU. The EU can and does restore the copyright to works that have gone into the public domain. The US and Australia will only bar further works from going public domain if a holder seeks an extension, but will not remove works that have already gone public domain from it.

So... all-in-all the moderators/owners of this forum are protecting themselves from a, theoretically possible, situation by maintaining that certain works cannot be offered up through these forums.

there you go, so they did copyright it after all. is it only US copyright or worldwide?

living in an EX - communist country sometimes does have it's advantages.
you see, in communism everything is public property (in theory). each and every citizen "owns" a share of everything. hard to implement when it comes to material property, but not so hard when it comes to intelectual work or art. for example, writers would get payed their royalties per book sold, but it wasn't a big money, no way anyone could get rich on it, just make a decent living.
if you wrote a highshool or college tutorial book people who could afford it would buy it and you got your check, and those who couldn't would just photocopy it. no one would make a hussle about it as long as you wouldn't make hundreds of copies and sold them. in fact, even if you made hundreds of copies and gave them away free, you couldn't be convicted. only if you sold them. same goes for workshop manuals.
that legacy still lives on, and even if, for example, Fiat Motors of North America, Inc. decided to sue me, they would need to go through very lenghty and expensive legal process only to find out in the end that they can't get any money from me. even if they won in court, all i'd need to do to avoid paying them would be to transfer all my belongings to my wife's (mother, father, children) ownership, which is also tax free. their lawyers would know that naturally and wouldn't even bother.
just check out east european and russian forums, there's all sorts of user manuals available for free. only problem is that we got very few 124 spiders over here , so noone has posted a complete service book so far.

Some of the venders have the FIAT Service manual for sale, the one the diagram came from. Its not a clymer, haynes or chilton but rather from FIAT.
