If you have a bench grinder get a rag wheel for it..that is the quickest way to polish aluminum. Only sand if the metal is rough or pitted. Other wise you will be making more work for your self..I've polished tons of aluminum...

I like the Crinkle paint. I used it on my cam boxes.

Must admit that I quite like the wrinkle finish - used it on the steering wheel and even the hood bar:
