according to my wiring diagram the fuel gauge has grey/red to sending unit; pink to sending unit, white/black to flasher unit; white/black that trails off to wiper control switch; white/black to tach, white to fuse I and yellow/black to tach.

This includes the gauge and its light I guess and seems like a hell of a lot of stuff but the flasher unit is indeed involved.

Also not sure if I have the bottle cap connector you mentioned. I have a 71, was that standard then?

thanks

71 did not have ground pods.

I think
Connections on the fuel gauge should be.
White/black wire is a ground for the gauge and the internal light bulb to illuminate the gauge.
White wire that is on the same terminal as the yellow/black wire is voltage from fuse 1 (A) and jumps voltage to other gauges.
Gray/red wire is the lo fuel warning light in the fuel gauge
Pink wire is the indicator needle wire from the sender.
White wire on a terminal by itself is the dash or internal light bulb.

When the sender's pink wire is at ground potential (shorted to ground) the gauge pegs beyond full.
When the senders pink wire is not connected (open) the gauge reads empty.

The fuel tank and the gauge need to be grounded for the gauge to work properly.

Pretty sure a 1971 has a separate flasher for the hazards mounted behind the instrument cluster. The signal flasher is mounted under instrument panel to the right of the steering column. The hazard flasher is powerd from the cars "hot all the time" circuit. The signal lights are powers by the "hot in start and run" circuit.

I swapped the 3 pun flasher unit and the fuel gauge is now working but still no turn signals or hazards. The flasher unit mentioned looks like a regular 4 pin relay...is it?

Fiddled around some more and temporarily had turn signals but no hazards. Put everything back together and stupidly yried to make the hazards work by matching colors to the wiring diagram. Now again no turn signals or hazards. I think i might have fried the new 3 pin flasher unit. Will buy another and if it works will not bother with f...ing hazards

Got turn signals to work again somehow...must have knocked something loose while putting it back together. Swapped the rear brake and turn signal lights for l.e.d.s and the rear running lights for 5w incandescent (noticed previous were 26w). Also did brown wire fix, rebuilt ignition switch, changed voltage regulator to solid state version from AR, cleaned contacts, grounds, connectors and deleted radio. The fuse heating up issue is gone as is any fuse blowing. I did screw up my speedo cable and still have no hazards. Im suspecting the hazard switch itself as the culprit...
