Sparks when connecting battery

Use a multimeter on ohm and check continuity between the body and the cables.

Guys, thanks for the help. In case it was not obvious, the battery was installed (or at least momentarily connected) backwards. I'll only take partial blame for this; in my defense, there was a red wire connected to chassis ground! (Arghh!!!)

But apparently either my battery maintainer failed over the winter or my battery was just dead from age / abuse. I have no juice. I charged it with a borrowed wall charger but to no avail. Brought the battery into the parts store and they tested it. Battery is dead for good...

When I replace the battery, I will also pony up a few bucks and change the red wire to black!

I think we've all experienced that same moment when we wonder, "What the he** was the previous owner thinking..." when he/she did something to our cars in during their prior ownership.
