it's been my experience that the clearances don't change very much after replacing the gaskets. If your clearances were marginal to begin with, you could end up a thou or so off.

That's what I was thinking. I have lots of expereicne with E-type jaguars which use a very similar valve adjustment shim setup and we regularly pulled cams and did heqad work without having to change shims. Granted it would be foolish to not CHECK clereances after putting it all back together (allow time for expansion and re-torque checks) but in my expereicne it is pretty rare to need to re-shim for a gasket change unless the old gaskets were really shot.

When I was playing with Jaguars we had a group of folks on the forum that got togehter to create (share the cost of) a shim assortment that went from person to person as needed. It can all be kept in a simple platic divider box costs less to ship around than buying a bunch of shims. One of the reasons valve adjustment is so neglectied is a lack of the tools and the shims. Are peopel interested in creating a kit with the tools and shims to share? We share the initla cost and as each member uses it they post that they are done and figure out who to ship it to next? Also, any shims you use are replaced by the ones you removed. What do you all think?

Well. It is back together and I have just gotten cleaned up enough to type.

There is some tapping and a sucking sound when I shut it off, so I think I got something wrong. :(

Having a kit of shims seems like a real good idea right now. :wink:

I ordered the new shims, waited -- not real long -- installed them. Umm... somehow I measured the gap wrong for #1 and when I reinstalled them - the clearance was too small. :oops:

Feeling pretty incompetent and would love to have a correct shim handy to slide right in there right now. I just do not know what happened.

It would seem like shipping might quickly get prohibitive?

If you have a Volvo dealer, (or eng shop that does Volvo's), you might check with them. The shims are the same as some Volvos, (there are also some thicker shims avail than from FIAT vendors).

Volvo dealer 1 mile from here... is there a particular model? I had read that the ford 1800 diesel would work, but the part department looked at me like I was insane.

Sorry, I'm not sure, but at the dealer I worked at they had assortments for doing valve adjustments in the shop. I'd take an old one in. I've been looking in the Mirafiori archives, sounds like Volvo B21engines used in 240 series i think.

That's a good suggestion. I would think the BEST bet then would be to find an indy repair shop that specializes in older Volvos as they are most likely to have the shims versus a new car dealer. I have onelike that about 25 miles away in Augusta GA and plan on calling them first thing Monday. Thanx.

Called the volvo parts and service departments around here. They did not have it available. I reexamined the old ones and one of them was a perfect fit. Didn't occur to me to recycle when I originally looked at it. :roll:
