I need an Auto/Neutral/Backup safety switch (possibly the part number is: 0004392436N) for my 1980 Fiat Spider 2000 with an automatic transmission and a fuel injected engine.
Sometimes my car won't start. I turn the key but nothing happens. By wiggling the shifter or moving it between park & neutral I can get the switch to connect allowing me to start the car, but the problem is getting worse. My mechanic can't find the part, but says he'll be happy to install a replacement neutral safety switch if I can find one.
If anyone knows where I can find the part or knows of an appropriate alternative part, please let me know.
Thanks,
v/r

Re: Neutral Safety Switch
Your transmission is a Turbo Hydromatic 180, as used in the Chevy Chevette and other cars. Maybe try a Chevy dealer with that p/n?
Re: Neutral Safety Switch
Thanks. Good idea. Unfortunately, I removed the boot covering the Fiat shifter assembly. The neutral safety swich I found in the Fiat did not resemble a diagram of parts showing a Chevette Neutral Safety Switch.
Bottomline: I don't think that idea is going to work.
