Help with rear calipers

Post by asoces »

I am trying to 'screw in' the pistons so I can reassemble my rear brakes, but am experiencing 2 problems...

1) The pistons are not going in at all - even after 10-15 clockwise turns.

2) The passenger side looks like it might have started to seep a dark gray fluid.

Any advice or suggestions for next steps?!?

Thanks.

you have to apply pressure to the pistons as well as turn them. You can open the bleed screw to let the fluid release when you retract the pistons.
Leaking is not good, time to rebuild or replace the caliper

Thanks for the quick reply, Mark. Rebuild or replace... I was afraid of that. I was hoping that somehow a little bit of seeping when compressing the piston was 'normal' - maybe just a little bit of lubricating grease coming out. Oh well, wishful thinking. :-(

its an easy rebuild. get some 400 grit sandpaper and clean the cylinder if it needs it, and install the new o-rings. voila.

Here's a great tutorial courtesy of Sam Doh on how to rebuild your rear calipers if you decide to have go at it. I rebuilt mine and found it to be a pretty simple project.

I was gonna buy rebuilt rear calipers but I looked at them and they look ok. The piston dust boots are in pretty good condition not like the fronts which were deteriorated.

I installed the new springs + pads. So, to get the caliper back on, I have to screw in the piston?

The only thing I noticed was that the rubber boot that goes over the spring on the ebrake cable is deterioated, who sells that? Thx.

Fine sandpaper is ok, but i recommend using a brake cylinder hone. Only like 10-20 bucks at autozone. Look it up online. Pretty easy to use.
