Too small convertible top??

Hello Gang,

Many many years ago, we purchased a soft top from some long-ago forgotten vendor. After having it professionally installed, we were told by those in the shop, that this particular top was too small, and ever since, it doesn't stretch all the way to fit around the back "curve" passenger side.

I hardly ever put it up, but those few times I do, it certainly has been a nuisance. I remember being told recently by a different Fiat mechanic, that this may occur due to improper installation vs. "too small" a top as was told previously.

Anyone run across this issue before? And because otherwise this top is in great shape, can it be resolved without having to purschase a new one?

Park it in the sun for a few hours to let the vinyl warm up and expand. Remove the vinyl covered trim piece above the rear seat, below the top. You will then see the hold down bracket and several screws or bolts. Loosen all of them but don't remove them. Stretch the top how you like it and then re-secure the hold down bracket and the trim piece.

This post was helpful to me. I think I will try that adjustment suggestion. My recently purchased '80 Spider has a new top (vinyl, w/oversized rear window I think) and I have trouble aligning the top's pins with the windshield receivers. Also, as an additional feature, it drips rain water at each corner of the windshield. It looks like some sort of fittings insert into the rubber molding but I am not sure. I only had to take the car out in the rain once, so far.

leaving it in the up position when not in use may help it stretch and will get the wrinkles out of your back window.
