I would have to say those are distributor cap hold down straps, just that one is broken. But they are painted red so they might be from an old air cleaner box.
You should have put a ruler or marker or something next to them so we know how big they are.

Bingo! "Thingy" is the best technical term too. After years of abuse, mine broke yesterday. So I made a new one.

Very nice thingy, Peter! I don't believe the newer model Spiders have the door hinge strap but I believe it saves the fenders from being hit by opening the door too wide.

And of course the thingy allows the door to stay half-open, if you're cramped for space somewhere. I think I'll let Brady commercialize it though - I can't imagine trying to sell Peter's Thingy :lol: :lol:
