timing belt

I have been reading with a lot of interest trying to learn as much as I can. There has been much discussion on timing belts on the forum, my question is, how tight should the timing belt be. I read some people say make sure the belt is tight, I read elsewhere where there should be some give. What is correct. I have a '69 124 Spider and my timing belt has about a 1/4" to a 1/2" play on it? Thanks

too tight is not good, and will cause the belt to "sing" when revved up. You should be able to twist the belt 90 degrees on the long stretch between the aux shaft and intake cam

Follow the instructions in the manuals and let the tensioner do it's thing. Compared to a V belt, like drives the alt, the timing belt will seem too loose. But let the tensioner do the tensioning, no more.
LIke Mark said, will "sing" or whine if too tight, AND will fail.

Timely information for me! I just ordered the parts to do the belt and a BUNCH of other stuff this weekend.

I'll be making a separate post about it, but little hints like this at the right time help me a lot. I second the PRICELESS comment!
