go to the Wheel & tire thread on this site and nose around. people here have put some interesting size combos on their Spiders and had it work. mostly its your preference and what wheel size you can get your hands on. note: spiders have an odd bolt pattern size 4x98 and most other cars in the sport range have 4x100 pattern so don't go running out and buying wheels before researching it

largest - 195 wide
recomended - 185 wide
how tall? use http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
original was 165/80/13 so closest match would be 185/70/13

a 185/70x13 is a very nice upgrade. car isnt cumbersome at low rpm, but cornering is greatly improved with no sacrifice in straight line tracking.
