I have '79 2000 manual transmission. It had a very corroded 16 amp fuse in it with no continuity. What is this in line fuse for? Best I can guess from the owners manual is either the cigarette lighter, fuel pump or supplementary air valve (what?). Anybody recognize it?
Check it out...

Re: What is this in-line fuse?
That is not a fuse, but actually a gauge resistor for your water gauge. The two senders in the head are a temperature sender and a limit switch. The limit switch is the wire coming in the right side of the resistor in the picture you have taken. When the water temp gets to a certain point, the switch completes the circuit, which pins the gauge for water temperature. Maybe just to get your attention if things are going really badly...
One of the black wires on the left comes from the sending unit, while the other goes to the water gauge itself.

Wow, after all of that, I took another look at your picture and saw the gauge resistor I just described in the far right of the frame (the blue piece that looks nearly identical).
I'm sorry for all of the info on the wrong component. I just figured Fiat got tired of using blue!

Alright, then. We still don't know what it is. If it is for a strain gauge, could someone please tell me what should go inside? It looked like a fuse to me. What is it called, specifically? Can I get it at IAP, Vic's?

It is a fuse holder. The two white ends are spade connectors and the red body screws together. It's most likely for the cig. lighter, but there's no way to say for sure from a picture. You could check continuity between the red wire and the center contact of the cig lighter. I had an issue with one of those on my car not making consistent contact with the fuse so I cut it out and put in a standard AGC type fuse holder.

Inside you should have a fuse, just like the ones in the fuse box holder.
I had the same question a little while ago. See:

and it is for the sigarette lighter.
