On my '78 spider I have taken the bumpers off and am replacing them with chrome bumper over riders like on old Shelby cobras. So now I need to put the turn indicators in. However, the hole provided is larger than the signal indicators which were mounted in the original bumper. So my question is has anyone else done this and what did you use for indicators. I have seen pictures of this so iI know it can be done.

I mounted mine behind the grill. I know there are a couple of people that make the blanks to go in the hole that have turn signals mounted. I used the pass side hole for a fresh air intake.

I would like to mount some driving lamps behind the grill. How did you get in there?

i just mounted turn signals in the grill. be aware that you have interference when opening the hood, and you dont have a lot of depth to work with. There is not a lot of metal to work with when mounting. The SS grill bezel can be removed from the front with 4 mounting screws. The grill can be removed from the front as well with mounting screws under the hood. John Demar has driving lights in his grill and they look great.

I removed the grill and made a couple of brackets out of flat iron. I did have to relocate the horn a little, because I wanted to use the OEM signals and have them a far out as possible.

I spent a bunch of time and effort working on the turn signal in the grill concept. There are 2 major issues. small LEDs are not bright enough when your headlights are on and located in the corner of the grill. When recessed in the grill, they are not visible from the side. especially on the side where you are turning. I solved this problem by using bullet style harley turnsignals and mounting them far enough forward that they can be seen from the side. Maybe not as cosmetically austhetic, but definitely more visible, thus safer. This took a lot of work to make custom brackets.

Your turn signals look good. I noticed that you installed bumperetts in the front. That is what I want to do, but instead of putting the turn signals in the grill as you did, I want to put driving lamps there and put the turn signals in the hole where they originally were. I have a '78 spider with the tubular bumpers and the turn signals were mounted in the bumper and those lights don't fit in the hole behind the bumper. I noticed you have lights there. Where did you get the fixtures that fit those holes.

Mine are a temporary (semi permanent) fixture in front of the grill, until I install the pre 73 units .

Really need to get some newer pictures, but this is just after I had the car painted and nothing really adjusted yet.
I bought the turn signals from Tony Miracle "grittracing". He sells them as a kit that fits in the off-square hole that the wires pass through for the tube bumper cars. I used a fiberglass filler to cover the seams to make it look, well seamless.
Only issue I have with them is the limited viewing of them from the side. I may wire the side marker lights to work with the turn signals to fix that. Bought the driving lights off ebay. They are in front of the grill, but do make contact with the hood when raised. The bracket is loose enough to move the lights when the hood opens, but stiff enough to stay in place when driving.

gittracing also selsl a spoiler that has driving lights in it.... pretty cool setup... turn signals in the holes you spoke of (also gittracing) and a spoiler with lights .... and you don't have to mess around with anything in the grill area.. and you have a spoiler too ... I went with a kit that Mark sell for my signals ... they fit in the bumper holes with a little work and a plain spoiler .... thinking I will use the square holes for fresh air intake or just cover them up when body and paint time comes ... driving lights I don't think are in my future ...which was a little disappointing to me until I cleaned all my grounds and added a relay kit for the headlights... also from Mark .... now I really don't feel I need them... might add the hella headlights somewhere down the road .... I really like the removing bumper look also ....

Those are not lights in the bumper holes. They have an alum grill over them and the pass side is a fresh air intake into the engine bay.

Some great info and ideas. I really appreciate it. I have only had my '78 for a few months. Never had one before. I am really needing help with the horn mechanize in the steering wheel if you can help me. Ta km e a look at my post titled horn.

Well I finally got my turn signals moved. I found that a 90's model jeep wrangler signal lights fit very well in the hole on the side. Got them mounted they look good now I can install my verticle bumper over riders.
