1971-74 crankshaft pulley wont fit 1978 engine

Post by Surfbeamer »

Hi
I am replacing my 1978 crankshaft pulley so I can put the alternator on the right. I got a 1971-74 crankshaft pulley described below. The diameter on the 1978 pulley is 1.181 inches and on the early model it measures 1.142 inches, 0.039" too small.

I thought I read that earlier crank pulley are interchangeable. It appear that is not the case, so hopefully this post will save others some time and money. I also talked to a machinist and its not practical to machine.

If anyone has any input on what to buy, Id appreciate it. I think I need a 1974 or 1975 pulley, since I want to have a stock engine look.

BTW, I will be posting for sale a nice clean early model crankshaft pulley ...
Thanks.

there are 2 different crankshaft snouts, the difference can be seen with the cog gear, one gear, slides thru the front seal, this is the early snout, and there is a late snout where the cogged gear doesnt go thru the seal, the crankshafrt seal rides on the crank, not the gear. they are different sizes. this statement doesnt take in account for the 1438, but the cogged gear follows one of the 2 as well there.
