how do I fill tranny gear oil??

Post by paris »

I'm wondering if someone can tell me how to get the gear oil in that little hole that seems to be blocked by the exhaust? Do I need a tube or am I looking at the wrong plug? It's on the pass side up from the drain plug. :?:

The drain plug is on the bottom cover, it faces straight down. The lower one on the side is the fill hole. It take 1 3/4 quarts of 90 weight non EP gear oil. That is where you fill and check for level. (actually the plug above it is the fill hole, but I use the lower one only)
There is also a small plug on the same side toward the back that is a drain plug for the rear of the trans. It has a square head on it about 1/4" in size.

I have hooked up a clear tube (as wide a tube that can fit in the hole) from the plastic squeeze oil container and inserted it in the hole and squeezed it in there. Some one else may have a better way of doing it, but at least it works.
Good luck

you can buy an inexpensive plastic pump that fits the gear oil container. Otherwise, tip the car onto its' left side to pour it in

AutoZone sells a generic hand pump that easily threads onto the top of those oil bottles. with the proper length plastic tube, you can just lay on your back and pump away. put the dog in the house first, however, cuz once she sees that both of your hands are occupied and you are vulnerable to attack........she'll not be able to resist the licking of the face.

tipping the car on its side is not a good idea, because you tend to overfill the tranny......

Nah, that's how I do it. I usually just lift the car up on one side with my left hand and pour in with my right. when you set the car back down the excess pours out the fill hole.

thanks for the info

These are all very good techniques. Each one will work. I, however, did it another (cheaper) way. I got a 4' piece of clear 3/4" outside dimension plastic tubing from Lowe's, snaked it down next to the engine to the fill hole, put a funnel in the top and had my son pour it in while I watched it at the tranny. Worked like a charm.

Oooo, good idea pope. I'll send him around the country to wherever he's needed. I think airfair would be cheaper than feeding him! He's 6' tall and weighs 300 pounds.

wait, pope! that looks an awful lot like a "knows everything" teenager!

you should be able to get a lot more out of him than just oil changes. he should be useful to do such things as:
set your retirement portfolio to the correct proportions
determine the best route to the the mall

and .. most importantly

how to set the time on the VCR !!

make sure you get the most use out of him as you can.
