I had a burned out tail light bulb on my 81 Spider. I removed the back of the tail light to take out the bulb. Something did not look right so I also removed the back of the opposite side and found the bulbs were different from side to side. I am finding a lot of interesting repairs done by the previous owner. Does anyone know if there is reference material about which bulbs go where? I have four bulbs in each tail light, not including the attached side marker lights. I tried the local chain parts store but their response was "what's a spider?" I would like to get the proper bulbs in the proper spots. Thanks.

There is lots of good information there, but I am looking for the exact bulb numbers. As one example, the turn signal bulbs were different on each side. Should it be an 1156, 1157, 1073 or something else. Each tail light housing has four bulbs, 1) turn, 2) back-up, 3) running and 4) brake. Thank goodness the lights all work, but some of the exact bulb types are different from side to side, even though they have the same function. I think the previous owner put in whatever was handy as long as the light came on when it was supposed to.

I think I found what I am looking for. There is a website that sells LED lights to replace OE incandescent bulbs. You can put in the year, make and model of your car and it lists the OE incandescent bulbs and the their LED replacement product. I am not looking for LED's yet, but their info helped me get the proper OE bulbs in the proper locations. It is http://www.superbrightleds.com. According to their site, the rear turn signal and the stop light are 1073/1156, the tail light and license plate light are 67 and the side markers are 194. They didn't have a listing for the back-up light. The front turn signal is a 1157. If anyone knows different or has other info I would like to know.

Daniel Stern Lighting will spec modern Honda bulbs which are significantly brighter.
Here is a communication that I had with him on this subject. I installed the bulbs and they are significantly brighter, yes.
"The brake lights and turn signals can be made 40% to 50%
brighter, but I can't sell you those bulbs. You can get the
required bulbs (which have nice nickel-plate bases that will
not corrode and seize in the sockets) from your local Honda
dealer.
Part number for the single-filament variety
(replacing 1141, 1156, 1073, 7508, or P21W) is
34903-SF1-A01
. Part number for the dual-filament variety
(replacing 1016, 1034, 1157, 2057, 2357, 7528, or P21/5W in
brake/tail or park/turn lights) is
34906-SL0-A01.
Don't try to buy these bulbs in the aftermarket, and don't let the
dealer sell you anything but a genuine Stanley-made Honda
bulb; everything but the genuine Honda product is junk.
These are ultra-premium bulbs with very long lifespan,
corrosion proof nickel plate base, etc."

Here is the page from my 81 owners manual
This might help if you are interested in the actual bulb #s. Lots of owners substitute other bulbs that are a close type.

Thanks Spider 2081
This sheds a lot of light on my question. I'll try to print the picture and save it in the glove box.
