Brake light switch

So the brake lights on my '81 weren't working. Turns out that the brake light switch (connected when you press the brake pedal) wasn't springing back enough. When I pulled the center plastic plunger part up they turned on. Here's a picture.
I used a bunch of silicone lube but it still has trouble springing out. My question is can I unscrew the plastic part from the metal housing/base to lube the spring properly and clean it? I tried turning the plastic section from near the base but it just seemed to turn forever and not unscrew as expected.
I could just get a new one from autoricambi but don't feel like waiting. Don't think this would be a common part.
