Need an ECU for Frankenstein (1980 spider)

Post by jbrice »

Hello all,
Last spring I bought an 80 spider that has been sitting since 1998. I have done new injectors, fuel tank, fuel pump, cleaned all fuel lines, radiator, timing belt and tensioner pulley, water pump, fuel pressure regulator, combination relay, and various other things that cost money. All of those parts that I replaced needed to be replaced according to the troubleshooting manual that I downloaded. At this point it will crank and run for about 3 seconds, then it dies. Fuel pump does come on when the flap in the air flow meter is pressed. My fuel pressure seems to be good, but my gauge is questionable because the gauge basically did the same thing even after a new fuel pressure reg. I have tested the ECU and two separate tests in the troubleshooting process tell me that it needs to be replaced. Of course that same process told me to buy all of those other parts as well and it still doesn't run. I pulled the ECU and took the cover off and it does look to have been overheated and it smells that way too. Here's my question...."Does anyone in the Atlanta area have an ECU that is known to be good that I could use to test with or even buy". I have found a couple on Ebay, but I just hate to spend any more money before I hear that baby purr longer than 3 seconds. Any advice you all could offer would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jason

I'm looking for an ECU. The AFM seems to be working like it should. I'm hoping that someone near Atlanta, GA has one that I can test or buy.

Frankenstein lives!!!!! I bought a used ECU from Matthews Parts in Birmingham, AL (which, by the way, is an incredible resource for old fiat stuff. He has been in business since 1980 and has a huge building full of fiat, alpha, mg, and other foreign car parts.) I put the ECU in and it came to life. To anyone fighting the same battle, keep testing and throwing money at it and you will eventually be victorious. Oh that motor sounds sweet!!!!

Great!!! Hope you enjoy the ride.
For me, one of the hard parts in trouble shooting is accepting that more than one thing can be contributing to what appears to be a single problem.
I would:
Keep the old injectors and consider at some point sending them out and tested. This costs about $20/injector.
Substitute the old double relay back in to see if it works now that other issues are repaired
Test the old fuel pump out of the car to see if it works. I spray WD 40 into the inlet and connect it to a battery if it runs it's probably ok.

I would do the above because its nice to have spares.

I live in Birmingham this old man literally has a warehouse full of stuff. Everytime I go there I like to walk around and check it out. Doesnt have many new parts (basically none) but is an awesome resource for good used parts. I don't think he has a website, but does alot of business on eBay. Or, just call him up and he probably has what you need.
