ALMOST THERE. PLEASE HELP!

Post by riddley57 »

This started with a temp gauge that advanced when the running or headlights turned on. I'll post on that later. I pulled the dash and began hunting the culprit. Along the way I discovered my 78 non-catalyst 124 spider shared parts and systems with the 79. This means when looking at wiring diagrams for those years some wire colors did not match, nor where they ended their meandering journeys. After a lot of tape cutting and hunting, I have just a few questions.

Is the wire from the ignition to the coil 16 gauge or another size?

A pink 16 gauge wire comes out of a shared connection off the C20 connector and goes through the firewall to the idle shut off solenoid on the side or the carb. This is one of the issues that did not show up on multiple wiring diagrams. Also, after it exits the firewall it is spliced to a pink 12 gauge wire before connecting to the solenoid. Does any of this make sense?

The pink wire mentioned above is joined at the C20 on a shared female end of a spade connector with a light blue/black 16 gauge wire. The blue/black wire goes back to the fuse box and shares a connection there with the ignition wire. The blue black wire was hacked up and taped. Both it and the pink wire it shared a connection with at the C20 were melted together. The pink wire was only melted about half it's length. All other wires around and sharing the connectors look fine. Any ideas what could have caused this?

I am going to attempt to attach some images of this mess so you all can better understand what I'm looking at. Thank you all in advance for your help, I could sure use it.

I have a 79 and a wiring diagram for a 79 which is no help. Sorry, Light blue/black and pink go from fuse 1 to the C27 connector then pink to the ignition switch ,then to the ignition coil, while the lt blue/black go to C 20 then to the idle shutoff solenoid. If you have the wiring diagram send it to me and I'll try to help.

You're a good man Jeeper. Thanks for the offer. I found some info in a supplement that kind of helps. I also found that different diagrams tag the connectors with different numbers, seriously I've got 4 different diagrams to work from. I'm just gonna have to trace everything from the fuse box and use common sense.

I studied the 80 wire diagram and think you have the correct paths for you wires identified. Wire diagrams do not necessarily
show physical locations. So although the "bat warn" light is not physically connected per the diagram I have it is connected between the voltage regulator and lite bulb as it should. Same appears true for the shut off valve. I think if you replace the damaged wires you will have fixed the issue.

Thanks spider2081. I replaced damaged wires and am now cleaning every connector i can find in the car. Gonna fire it up tomorrow and see if I pop a fuse or worse.
