1977 Fiat 1800

Post by dreavis »

I was looking for an old VW and came across an ad for a 1977 Fiat 1800. After some research into the history of the car, I bought one. This is my first old car and my first used car. Needless to say, I made a lot of mistakes. I paid to much, didn't get the car checked by a knowledgeable mechanic, etc,, etc. Live and learn.

The guy who sold me the car advertised it as having a new clutch, new engine overhaul, new luxury upholstery, new convertible top, new paint. It has none of those things. The interior is original and pretty nice, so I let that slide. The paint looks good, so I let that go as well. Nice top. I was looking for something I could get in and drive and not a project, but now I have what I have. There were no signs of leaks when I looked at the car, but it leaked oil on my driveway the second I got it home. I found out it's coming from the seal between the transmission and engine. Then I learned the parking brake was improperly installed and had ruined the right rear caliper. Then I learned I need to replace all the calipers and that one of the rear bolt holes is stripped requiring a new axle. The list goes on...:)

My friend told me to sell it at a loss and move on because he was confident I would quickly learn to hate the car. But hey, it's not the car's fault! I'm determined to love this little car and I'm glad to have such a great resource as the forum.

The car is dark red with a tan interior, red carpets, black top. I've been trying to find out the exact name of the color, but have been unsuccessful. I'm sure someone here can tell me.

Also, if anyone has experience with small claims court in CA, I'd be interested to get your advice/opinion.

Thanks!

Welcome. Sorry to hear about your problems. I had a similar experience to a lesser degree with my first Spider. I sold it when I bought another and restored it. I still regret selling it (even though two didn't make sense).

One of life's little truths is that there may be no one you dislike as much as the previous owner of your Fiat.

I may never sell my current one just so I won't be that person!
