Hazard switch "guts" repair

Post by stuartrubin »

All, on my '75 Spider, while putting in the upper console I managed to badly bugger up the hazard switch. (This is the rectangular rocker switch, not the round push button one on newer models.) Basically, the switch stopped rocking and clicking nicely, so I disassembled the switch itself hoping to see something obvious, but instead, two metal pieces were "freed" from the assembly and I cannot see how to get them back in!

I don't see any broken plastic, bent metal, etc. which would prevent me from repairing the switch, but I just can't see how it goes back together.

Does anyone have any photos or hints on how to get the switch back into one piece?

Thanks!

The two pieces of metal just sit at the bottom (if the connectors are facing down).
The rocker part has a spring loaded part int he center that rocks these contact to ones side or the other.

the switch usually fails because the spring loaded pin on the back side of the toggle button fails. make sure that pin can slide in and out easily and the tip is pretty centered. check the contact points while it is out.

Vandor, thanks for the help! I guess I was overthinking it thinking that somehow the metal leafs would be held in place somehow, but nope. Just dropping them back in and closing it up did the trick. I buzzed the contacts with a millimeter and the switch seems to work un-installed.

I'm hoping to pull the upper console out in the next couple of days and re-install it. The switch plastic is pretty brittle and cracked in a bunch of places, but hopefully I can finesse it in without it crumbling.

I had a good laugh when I realized that the turn signals don't work with the hazard switch out, then thought it was pretty stupid, then after figuring out how it worked, really appreciate the elegant solution!
