Heater fan on '81

Post by rjkoop »

One of the things that failed my safety was the heater/def fan wasn't working. Power is good (confirmed with a tester) but when I hook the fan directly into the power it doesn't turn. I saw this.

But I think it's for an older fan (mine doesn't have the same tabs). Are these things easy to rebuild? I think I see some really really small tabs on the housing that might bend back and then the top/bottom metal retainer should pop off and the motor should slide out. Does this seem right? Also does the fan/def position of the switch determine the speed? I think the flap is what really deflects the air to the heater versus the defrost vents.

I redid my 79's fan it was straight forward I followed the directions you referenced, the tabs are small so be careful bending them.

For fan speed the rocker switch controls the hi low speed, the levers control floor/defrost, temp, and air inlet from outside.
Stay Safe,

Heater fan fixed, reinstalled and working great. Turned out that one of the shoes (not sure of the name... the 2 parts that contact the center section that are supposed to spring back) was stuck. Put back the center console and radio console. Everything works great now.

3 more items to go. New tires (ordered but not yet installed), the washer fluid motor (ordered from autoricambi) and the rad minor leak (hopefully new drain bolt will fix). Then it should pass safety hopefully!
