Running 2½" Exhaust

So I bought some 2½" mandrel bends to complete my dual exhaust for my v6 so that it will run out the back. In preparation I have been taking measurements and have made a discovery with regards to clearance of the panhard link. I measured roughly 3" of clearance between the bottom of the trunk and the top of the panhard rod. My question is has anyone used 2½" pipe with the twin cam? It's looking like I'm going to have to modify the panhard rod so that it drops down a couple inches for the bigger pipe to clear it.

we use 2 1/4", part of the reason is clearance

Appreciate the quick fire response. I kind of figured that it was a no.. There's been a lot of talk lately about exhaust. So it got me thinking I better check clearances. That was the only iffy area.. I'll post pics when I'm done..

I came across an article on hotrod.com about building exhaust out of an assortment of mandrel bends and that there was less restriction and cheaper versus going to the exhaust shop and having them bend custom bends without using a mandrel bending machine. So far once I modify the panhard rod I'll have the room for running dual exhaust completely out the back.

be careful moving the panhard rod, otherwise the rear end shift as the car moves through the suspension travel may not be to your liking. Why not consider a Watts linkage if you're going to make mods? That will allow suspension travel without rear axle shift from side to side

That's funny that you mentioned the watts linkage... I removed the pivot from the rx7 differential I'm using so that I could use that point for the 3 link conversion I did.. At any rate, I won't be changing the pivot points. I'll be modifying the pipe so that it jogs down a couple inches as versed to being straight from one pivot point to another. I've seen it done before on hotrods..

They actually make an oval or flattened exhaust pipe just for these clearance issues but the stuff is expensive from what I know.. The easy fix is to put a "jog" in the panhard rod that will yield quite a bit of clearance..

As long as the length bushing to bushing is the same and the jog doesn't introduce a lot of flex that should not be a problem as long as it does not strike anything above it.

What are you going to fabricate the jog from?

I would put the existing bar in a jig and lock it down before cutting the spot out for the jog to ensure end to end is exactly the same when done as when you started.

I'm going to make a new panhard rod from thicker material. I have a couple of poly joints from Pete and Jakes that I'm going to use in place of the existing rubber joints.. And creating a jig is exactly how it is done..

Me too! I'm short on 2½" Exhaust pipe.. About a 10 foot section! :shock:

Sooooooo.. When I get a few bucks I'll be able pick some up. And get started.. I also need a section of tubing for the panhard rod.

Now that I have replaced the windshield, I'm going to focus on the exhaust again.. I found a local muffler shop that will sell me a ten foot section of 2½" pipe.. I should be able to pick it up this month.. Stay tuned..

Sounds like a great project, modifying the pan hard, but...

A 2 1/2" pipe can be made to fit.
I did the same and picked up a collection of mandrel bent pipe, cut, fit tack under the car and then pulled the whole thing out to weld it.

I might have been able to get away with that if I was running single exhaust on the passenger side.. But I'm running dual for my v6. And there is not enough clearance on the driver's side.. What I'm doing will work. Any how I'll post pics soon and that will explain it.. :)
