I bought a spider and changed the breaks and clutch; afterward this I found that the battery was bad and low on charge (new battery now). I jumped the car to take it for a test drive and stalled on a hill with no traffic behind me. The battery failed me of course. I panicked, threw it into reverse, and tried to roll start it backwards like my friends old 911.
Needless to say, the roll start failed. The car did not decide to stay in reverse, it did however decide to grind horribly every time I try to put it in reverse.
Did I mess up a synchro?
How much damage am I doing every time i grind the gears?
One of my parts guys told me that the synchros were built into the gears and that I would need to replace the gears entirely to fix the synchro rings; is this true?
also, my shifter has come out of the transmission on the road twice, resulting in a situation which apparently is hilarious only to me.
I have changed the shifter washer to a lock washer/new nut/lock tight. It still seems to be coming loose.
anyone have this problem?
jb weld?
thanks

grinding into reverse!
Re: grinding into reverse!
reverse does not have a synchro, the fwd gears do not have built in synchros, they are separate pieces. If the shifter keeps loosening, the lower shift cup is worn. Once the hole in that cup is enlarged it will cause the locknut to continually loosen. The shift cups are available in a kit from the vendors
Re: grinding into reverse!
Thanks for the reply, I will order some shifter components tonight. When i pull the transmission off again, what should I be looking for regarding the grinding? Is this a rare problem?
I have also played around with the clutch cable length, but to no avail.
