Cranks but won't start

Post by ralphcap »

I just finished major (for me) work on my '81 2000 FI. Now it cranks but won't start. I replaced the head gasket, timing belt, exhaust manifold gasket, spark plugs and radiator hoses. I followed the instructions in the shop manual step by step. However, I did not remove the crankshaft pulley because I was able to install the timing belt without doing so. I have spark and I checked the signal to the injectors using a noid light. The the fuel pump is working. I sprayed starting fluid in the plenum...still would not start. Any suggestions?

It should be CAM timed with #4 piston at TDC, not #1. That could be it. Or ignition timing could be way off, that would do it too. Bad grounds could be keeping the Injectors from firing. There are two ground wires that attach to the intake plenum top screws at the rear, side by side, on the intake side.

When installing the timing belt I made sure that the camshaft timing marks were aligned with the cam housing marks, that the crank pulley notch aligned with the 0 degree mark and that auxiliary shaft was aligned correctly. Shouldn't this have resulted in the Cam timed with #4 piston at TCD? I had reattached the two ground wires to the intake plenum top screw rear - one on top the other which was how I found them. I also reattached the ground wire on the exhaust side to the cylinder head as it was when I removed it. How can I check the ignition timing if the engine isn't running? Hope thee aren't dumb questions.

Yeup if you have all the marks lined up properly the engine is ready to go provided the rotor in the dist. cap is about to contact #4 pin. Follow #4 from the outside to the contact inside . Get that sorted and then crank with a fully charged battery with good battery connections.
I take it the wires in the dist. cap are in good shape. They get brittle and will then break with no spark provided.

Thanks RRoller123 and narfire. Hope to check the rotor today.

Hate to confess this but the reason it didn't start after reassembly is because I had the spark plug wires on the wrong cylinders! Duh! It started right away and is running great.
