What controls the 10deg advance for the dual point ignitions?

Post by squealingtires »

What controls the 10 degrees of advance for the starting circuit of the dual points distributors? In my attempt to change out to a single point system, I was unable to find the relay under the glove-compartent; instead I traced the green and green-black wires under the hood to a relay on the driver's sided inter fender. I believe it is the actual position of where the cold start points are screwed on to the distributor plate. You can set the dwell angle for each set and any changes to timing will affect both sets but the cold start set will always be "ahead" by ten degrees of the running set.

In changing from dual to single point, just run a new wire from the ignition coil to the the points. This bypasses all the wiring and control units involved with the dual points circuit. If you trace the stock wires you will be amazed at all the crap you can now remove.
